Teeth Whitening Q&A

What happens during teeth whitening?

Professional teeth whitening procedures have substantially increased in popularity in recent years as men and women realize the advantages of having their teeth professionally whitened. Dr. Refoa offers two techniques – in-office whitening and take-home whitening kits – to help patients get the results they want in the way that's most convenient for their needs. During both treatments, a special gel is applied to the teeth and allowed to penetrate deeply into the tooth to help eliminate stains on and below the surface safely and effectively. During your office evaluation, Dr. Refoa can discuss both approaches so you can select the one that's best for your needs.

Are your take-home kits better than the kits I can buy in a drugstore?

Yes. Dr. Refoa uses trays designed to fit your teeth so the gel can penetrate hard-to-reach areas more consistently than one-size-fits-all over-the-counter treatments. Plus, the gel is more powerful than drugstore treatments so you get better, longer-lasting results. Dr. Refoa can also perform a tooth cleaning and exam prior to whitening so you can feel confident the gel material will penetrate deeply and any sensitivity will be minimized.

Will whitening make my teeth extra sensitive to hot and cold foods?

Tooth whitening can cause some people to experience mild sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, but the effects are temporary and resolve soon afterward. Having your teeth examined prior to whitening helps identify and repair tiny cracks or fissures that can increase the likelihood of sensitivity issues.

Can I have my teeth whitened if I have fillings?

Absolutely. You should be aware, though, that whitening your teeth can make old, dark, metal amalgam fillings appear more visible. Many patients have amalgam fillings removed and replaced with mercury-free tooth-colored fillings for the most cosmetically-pleasing results.
